Julian McMurray for SDC President! [UPDATED]

If you know Julian you understand why he is our choice for SDC President. Julian exemplifies leadership both in and out of the classroom, on and off the road. Simply put, he knows how to get the job done. With his boyish good looks and charming smile, there is little this man cannot accomplish.

Julian has pledged his commitment to help the Cycling Club to the best of his ability. Which essentially means we own him like Snooki owns the poof.

Be sure to make it to room 156B at 11am on Tuesday to vote for Julian.

Flying V

Today the club took a quick ride around the short route with a couple new members. The first was a long time rider, first time clubber, Matt "Nair" Davidson. Nair is a long time rider and Ironman athlete, which essentially means he could kick all of our asses.

The second new rider was Jeff "Goose" Binder. You may be asking yourself, "Self, why is Jeff's nickname Goose? Is it due to his extensive military back group? Maybe it is because he leaves droppings all over the golf course?" Neither of these guesses are correct. Next time please just allow me to explain the story without interrupting your reading with idiotic thoughts.

The real reason why Goose is Goose is as follows. During the winter many birds find in necessary to fly south to a warmer climate. While flying they tend to form a "V" to cut the wind and allow for an easier flight. While this works well for geese, the same principles apply to cyclist. Normally the geese will rotate from back to front working their way forward until they take the head position. In our case, everyone moved forward to take the lead except for one weak goose who stayed in the back the entire ride.

On the positive side, he was able to make it all the way...95% of the way up the north entrance hill at school.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way Out of Big Shark

As you may have read in the last post we have a new rider/member, Garrett "Banana" Brugger. He may have fooled you by wearing such a sweet kit on our ride last week but he is actually not an owner of a bike or any type of equipment. So, yesterday, Captain and I decided to bring Banana out to a couple shops to try some bikes on for size.

We ended the day at Big Shark on the Loop in U-City and had a wonderful salesman named Kevin. He talked to Banana about what type of riding he was doing, what his price range was, all the normal stuff. In no time, he had him up on a trainer sizing him up in their state of the art fitting area. Banana found about four bikes he liked and took them all for a vigorous test ride. He was able to find one that he liked the best but didn't want to jump the gun too quick. He needed some time to think it over.

On the way out of the shop, Banana noticed he did not have his phone with him. After some thought he realized he took it out of his pocket while he was being fitted. What he did not realize is that there were some hoodlums that came into the shop and stole his phone while he was out on a test ride. When Kevin heard the news, code 4 was set into place, and he rounded up two of his most trusted employees to track down the bandits. In what seemed like just an instant, they had grabbed a few bikes off the stands and heading out in search of Banana's precious phone.

While we waiting for the employees to return from the hunt, we had decided that there was only a slight chance his phone would be recovered but still we had faith. About 30 minutes later one of the employees (we will call him Steve), came up to us and told us they found the phone. Once they captured the thief, Steve noticed he had stashed the phone in a bush while they were interrogating him. Good work Steve! Banana was soon reunited with his trusty mobile and all Big Shark employees were congratulated with the official Logan Cycling Club high five (which is no different than a normal high five).

I would like to think that Kevin stopped the thieves like this...

Big Shark, we commend you! Not only have you captured Banana's phone, you have captured our hearts in the process.

Inaugural Group Ride Report

Hello Logan Cycling Club fans and members. I apologize for not posting anything sooner but I find I must wait to be inspired before I can adequately post.

Our first ride as a University recognized club went great. We started with six people, picked up one along the way, and finished with five. We are still not sure what happened to the other two but we are working on erecting a memorial in their honor.

We had multiple firsts on the ride, we had our first member to vomit, our first broken derailleur, a first time road rider and our first sponsorship. Apparently, Captain and a new member Rob "The Tool" Hammerling, received sponsorships from Orange and Lemon Jell-O. I hope Bill Cosby is not upset.

Surprisingly, our new rider, Garret "Banana" Brugger, not only kept up with the rest of us but often set the pace, leaving the rest of us in the dust. Here is a picture we snapped while he was acting casual.

Our next ride is looking to be on Sunday as Saturday is going to be cold and rainy. Keep checking back for updates. And Ruby 106 if you are out there we have your license plate.

Distance: 20+ miles depending who comes

Annual Meeting Recap

If you are on the e-mail list then you already received this information. We are all very excited about what is to come for the club. Check back frequently as the blog is now out of hibernation for the winter.

"In case you were not at the meeting yesterday, here is what you missed.

- Group road rides will be starting in the next few weeks and should be twice a week, one after classes during the week and the other on Saturday morning.

- Secure bike rack on campus. Many of you may have noticed that there are not many places to park your bike at school. We are in the process of finding a covered area for us to put our bikes on days we do group rides or if you plan on riding in to school and don't want to have to worry about leaving your bike outside. More to come on this soon.

- STL to KC ride. Plans are in the works for a St. Louis to Kansas City ride for the club. We are very excited about this and would like to have as many people as possible participate. We do not want to exclude anyone from coming with us, even if your fitness level is not up to a ride that long, we would like to make it possible for folks to attend as support drivers or ride half days or every other day.

- T-shirts are on order today and should be in by the end of next week. If you have not paid your $10 you may do so any time next week. You can find me or Jonathan Emlet. Our classroom is G48 if you want to come down between classes.
