1997 Tour de Spine

I just found something interesting on Logan's 1997 home page. Apparently a bunch of students road from school to Orlando in 10 days and raised a bunch of money. Plans for next summer boys?

Breast Cancer Awareness Ride

This past Saturday Captain, Tool and I rode in a Trek organized Breast Cancer Awareness charity ride. Along with us were lots of other people from around the area and a group of girls who are also from Logan but not yet in the club. It was a fairly flat ride at a steady pace and always nice to get out in a big group and ride around the town.

At the end of the ride there was a raffle in which Captain won a autographed George Hincapie jersey, I claimed the last event t-shirt, and Tool asked for a girl's number but was rejected. Maybe next year big guy.

In other news, we have a new member to the club, Michael "Hansel" Miller who has been out with us a couple of times, often leading the pack.

Also, McConaughey got a new bike to replace his old one after the crash. He can be seen posing in the picture below just after he fed the 5000.

See you next time.

Night Rides Are Back!

This past Thursday was our first night ride of the season. Accompanying me were two of the club's premiere members, Banana and a new member, Leanne "Nail" Dalton. Not much can be given as to the origin of her nickname other than this clue: A nail is often followed by this type of Tool.

Due to a mishap on Tuesday's ride with McConaugehy, I was forced to bring the Univega out of retirement and attempt the hills weaving back and forth in one gear. Luckily we were all able to take the Boss and be on our way with little trouble. As is the custom on our night rides, we heading out to Babler State Park for some pitch dark and open streets to ride.

When we arrived back at school we were happily greeted by Mark. We snuggled up next to him and fell asleep as he read us his favorite book.

We have changed the night rides to 8pm for the folks who want to finish sooner. Hope to see you all there on Thursday.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Report

The Ribbon Cutting today was so much more than we could have hoped. Not only did we have multiple students attend, we also had many faculty and staff as well as Dr. Goodman and Dr. Liz.

The day was extra hot, luckily we came prepared with waters and orange slices left over from the Rock's U-7 soccer game. It is always nice to know your friends have your back.

Thanks again to all who attended and a special thanks to those of you who pledged money for our charity ride.

PS: We have a new member, Wes "McConaughey" Curry. Welcome to the club big guy.

Day Four: We Made It!

After a terrible day of riding, we were certain that anything would be better. The morning was a bit cool but the wind had died down and the sun was out. After a few miles in we ran out of outer road and had to travel north for a few miles to pick up with highway FF which would bring us all the way into KC. On our way north we made two stops.

The first stop was in a small town called Aullville. The interesting thing about this town was that the population signs on each side of the town quoted two different numbers. On the way into town the population was 72 and on the way out it was 85. I understand that the three of us would have increased the population but not by 15. I can only assume that in an effort to save money the town decided to create a range in while their population could fall at any time within the next few years. A good way to save taxpayer dollars.

The second stop was in Higginsville. It is a bit larger than Aullville but nothing to get too excited about. While entering downtown we could smell the sweet aroma of bratwurst on the grill. We pulled into the gas station and were pleased to find that it was their one year anniversary, which meant free food and drinks for everyone who stopped.

At about 7:30 that evening we arrived at our final destination at City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. Shortly after we arrived The First Lady and Mrs. Captain showed up with warm clothes and party hats to celebrate my birthday. That night we partied like we were rockstars and stayed our last night camping in a friend's backyard.

310 total miles and about 22 hours or riding. It sure was an epic trip for us all.

More pictures on our Flickr page.

Day Three: Wind

Our original plan for day three was to ride from Boonville to Lee's Summit which is about 100 miles total. With every intention to follow our plan it was not to be, as we were met with 20-25 mph head minds.

The Rock had met us the night before and decided it would be a good idea to ride his track bike. We try our best not to argue with him because his personality matches that of a barroom instigator. Paul is also our club reverend and he often prays over us in the morning before we hit the road.

About 25 miles into the ride we saw a Dairy Queen and chose to stop. It didn't seem like many of their patrons were used to seeing three guys in skin tight clothing, but I am pretty sure the truckers didn't mind. While we were there we met a gentleman, who I could only guess is about 80 years old, with his father enjoying a blizzard. Apparently the fountain of youth is hiding at a DQ somewhere west of Boonville. They gave us some good directions and saved us about 7 miles, thanks old dude and almost dead father.

After meeting Jinpu a few hours later we decided to cut the ride down to about 65 miles after we estimated we would not arrive in Lee's Summit until about 11pm. We called around and found a hotel with some comfy beds in Concordia. We grabbed a bite to eat at a local saloon and met some of the locals. It is interesting where you find a southern accent in this state.

Only 65 miles to Kansas City.

Day Two: The Unintentional Century

I woke up this morning expecting to be very sore but felt surprisingly refreshed. The Kan-Do Campground had treated us well. After a quick breakfast and camp teardown, we jumped on the bikes and headed out to Boonville.

Originally our itinerary told us it would be about a 75 mile ride. The start was mostly outer roads but after about 10 miles the road turned to dirt and we were forced to take a detour. The map on my phoned showed a quick left turn and then a right back toward a paved outer road. What we did not realize was that most of the roads in middle Missouri are dirt and we went about 10 miles out of our way to get back en route.

A few miles down the road we ran into a truck stop and an odd McDonald's sign.

We also made a quick stop at Nostalgiaville and grabbed a Coke and a smile, 'cause that's the way it should be.

In no time we had traveled about 50 miles and we stopped in Columbia to meet Jinpu and eat some lunch. Upon our arrival we discovered nachos, a rack of ribs, a box of cookies and 24 beers waiting for us. Dr. Li had really outdone himself. It is always great to eat a huge pile of garbage after a morning of riding.

The last 25 miles quickly turned into 50 with a few wrong turns and a 2 mile walk on anunridable dirt road. As miserable as the afternoon became, it ended very well with us averaging about 22 mph on the last 8 miles into Boonville. A smooth road and tailwind is always nice to round out a ride.

When we arrived, our trusty sidekick was waiting for us atop a hill in Harley Park, and again we ended our day watching the sunset.

Day One: Riding Off Into the Sunset

Boy did you all miss a good time. They is so much to say I don't know where to start...

The day started off fairly slow as Captain thought we were leaving on Thursday and not Wednesday. We all me over at his place, packed the car up and we were on our way, to Logan. Like every group ride we must start at Logan. This time however, we took a picture with Mark before the ride in stead of at the end as we would normally do. While we were getting everything in order at school we noticed a secret service type mobile waiting at the front and Dr. Jason Goodman and a few others walking toward it. We exchanged the normal pleasantries and went on our way but during the ride I could not figure out what was going one. It could have been one of Dr. J's high profile friends like normal but after a while I believe I figured out what was going on. I believe what President Obama is going to nominate JayDog as the new Supreme Court Justice. It all made sense to me.

Anyway, after all that we actually started the ride. It started out fairly slow as we were preparing for am long day in the sun, cranking away. Our first pit stop was over the 364 bridge to make sure Jinpu was comfortable with all the directions and the GPS device. Upon our arrival we found no Jinpu. After a few phone calls he assured us that he was there and we must have been in the wrong place. We did notice a Delorean in the lot so there may have been some sort of alternate reality going on.

The next 20 or so miles did not go very well. We had hit a good amount of traffic in St. Charles county while people were getting out of work and they were not too happy to see us slowing them down. We were holed at numerous times and almost forced off the road in a few cases. Luckily we escaped unharmed.

Once we were west of Wentzville is was smooth sailing for us. It is amazing how long and straight the county roads are in Missouri. It is also interesting how they are all named by letter with little rhyme or reason. We started out on N, made our way over to Z, then back to N, then OO, M, H, F, and ended with TT. I am not sure which letter was or sponsor for the day but we did spend a good amount of time on M.

Our second stop was in Warrenton at a Kroger. Not much to. Mention about that, although we did get some interesting looks from some the shopper. Also, pepperoni and Cheetos have never tasted so good together.

The last stretch of 25 or some miles was amazing. It was getting late and we were running out of sunlight. Because we were headed west the sun was setting just in front of use the entire time and it was glorious. I imagined it to be much like the end of the Last Crusade where they all ride off into the sunset together. We however do not plan on making the worlds worse sequel in 20 years.

That's all for now. See you guys tomorrow.

And They're Off!

Today we embark on our qwest to Kansas City. Stay tuned for "daily" updates on our progress.
The itinerary has been updated below. So, if you are feeling adventuress come out and ride or meet us in the evening by the campfire.

It's going to be Legen...dary!

Sorry it has been so long...

Dearest Fans,

I want to first apologize to all of you who have been patiently waiting for a new post. Secondly, I would like to make it very clear that creativity wears no watch, and if you try to rush perfection you may end up on the ground behind a parker landscaping trailer.

I would like to now thank Logan College of Chiropractic for their continued support of our club. They have gone above and beyond what was expected and installed a brand new bike rack in the back of the student center. I can only assume that our tuition hike is due to this improvement. Fortunately, many of us own ah bike which would necessitate an entire bike rack. I have been told by security that there is a camera that monitors the area and it will be safe to keep your bike their during the day. Let's make good use of this rack in the future.

(The Cycling Club continues their ongoing feud with the Logan MOTORcycling Club. Our hope is that this controversy will soon be resolved.)

The club has also gone on multiple rides in the past few weeks with some mentionable events. Most notably is the inception of two new members, Brian "Magellan" Laiderman and Rick "Hen Waffle" Simpson. Shortly into our group ride we learned that Magellan had essentially explored all of West County and knew the best roads to take. Hen Waffle gained his name from a Sarah Palin Baby Generator, because he is from Alaska.

Also of note, no one has gone to the hospital since Starman's recent disaster. Banana however has found interesting ways to fall over in slow motion while still clipped in to his pedals.

Make sure you guys put your orders in for your kits and get in contact with me to get fitted.

Love,
Johnson

Helmets Save Lives

Ride on 10Apr10-
If only I knew what was about to happen that day I would not have contacted our Master and Commander 'Johnson' to request that we push back the Sat. ride to noon so I could join the crew after my shift in the blood lab. There were only three of us that showed up on this absolutely perfect day, 'Banana', 'The Tool', and I. We started out in the usual manner circling the parking lot like a native american tribe around the tribal fire before a hunt. Once our cycling juices were flowing we headed down the south entrance in search of adventure. As we approached Clarkson Rd. 'Banana' suggests that we take on the larger 27 mile route since it was such an amazing day and we seemed to have the time for it. I had not informed them that I had dropped my wife off at the Pure Harmony Day Spa before my shift and needed to pick her up by 3ish, so I took the lead and tried to set a quick pace. This was no problem for our manly crew, and so the pace was kept with such professional drifting and repossitioning as I've ever seen. The winding downhill of Clayton just before Strecker is a nice place to pick up some speed to carry through the flats before you hit the first Boss(large hill) as noted in the previous blog-Night Ride Two-TMNT. That is unless you catch the light red as we did on this fine day. So our momentum was deminshed and the lead into the Boss was not going to be as pleasant as hoped. I decided to take the lead from here and gather up as much momentum as I could so the 'kick punch combos' wouldn't be so bad to start off.
I however was unable to make it to the Boss...
Just after McBride Pointe Dr. I had lowered my head and devoted all of my energy to getting up to an optimal speed. I looked back in my rearview to check where Banana, and The Tool were, only to look back up in time to see that someone had parked a landscaping trailer on the side of the road. I had just enough time to think "Damn this is going to hurt", and CRASH! Luckily I was wearing a helmet and it took the brute force rather than my skull. Had I not been wearing it I would not be typing this today.

As I dismount the bike in excrutiating pain, I notice a girl walking in the opposite direction about to die laughing, and remember thinking "yeah I'd be laughing too if only I could breathe". I drop to the ground and lie on my back and finally catch my breathe. The two other stop, dismount and rush up to assess the sitation. In no time a cel phone was whipped out and 911 was on the phone. These guys are studing to be medical professionals after all, and I was in good hands.
Then the thought runs throgh my head 'Shit, this is really going to screw up my wifes day at the spa', not to mention I had dropped her off... she was stranded at the day spa. If you really think about it, if I were to be stranded somewhere a day spa isn't all that bad!
Luckily the Chief of an ambulance company just so happened to be driving in the area and was the first on the scene. In no time at all an ambulance arrived, I was on a backboard and rushed off to St. Johns Mercy Hospital.
I've been in the ER a few times, as I'm sure you can imagine by now, but I was in CT'd and out the door in under two hours, that's impressive! Luckily my CT scan came back showing there was nothing broken. By the time I was signing my release papers our fearless leader comes walking in with our "First Lady". They escort me outside where 'Banana' and 'Tool' were just walking up. These two manly men had shaken off the incident and decided to go on and defeat the rest of the 27 mile route as a duet. They then informed me that it was just not the day for me to be out there on the ride, because as they rode up to Kehrs Mill Rd, there stood a deer. I'm thinking it was the same one that had tried to take me down last September, and since she had not been successful was back to finish me off.
For those of you wondering what ever happened to my wife the lovely ladies at Pure Harmony Day Spa were kind enough to drop her off at the ER. A special thanks goes out to them for taking such good care of her that day, and also the lady who held my bike for me while I was at the ER.
Unfortunately my steed was injured on this ride, and I am back to riding the '75 'Mean Green Machine', until I am able to replace her front forks. I have also found the jersey I am saving up to purchace, I think it suits me...

Leisurely Roll Through Edwardsville(Solo)

So thursday of last week, was a pretty nice day! I had a 5 hour break between Lecture and Lab, don't you just miss the hell out of ASP?!?! So in the most leisurely attitude I decide to enjoy this day to it's fullest and take advantage of this beautiful weather by of course going on a bike ride. I had noticed another route along the one I usually ride and always wondered where it went... but I've always seen this on a map and never could figure out where it was on the route. Well my urge for adventure now unable to be withstood, I head out in search of this rougue trailhead.

As I got closer to where I suspected this cloaked concrete to be, I slowed slightly crouched ready to spring in any direction at the slightest sight of this man made thoroughfare. Once I spotted the trailhead, I tucked and tilted and hit that corner like a pro sport bike racer. Soon thereafter there was another set of 90 degree snakes. Now my blood was pumpin, adrenaline flowin, senses on the edge. I cross over a small parking lot, and heading down a slight slope, when I see the image above.... then I start to notice the road I am about to merge onto is quite substantially more narrow than the one I am currently navigating. A normal person would have slowed to roughly 5-10 mph, cautiously changing vector. However, this is not the case of an adrenaline junkie that decides 15-20mph is a safe speed as long as he tucks and tilts at a steep enough angle... that is until I got close enough to notice that the surface is, how should I put this, not as securely bonded to itself as it could be. Once again if taken at a slow enough rate of speed you could correct and avert a catastophe. I'm in such a good mood from the begining of this newfound trailhead that, I've started narrating my own ride to myself. As I come careening down this trecherous trailhead, I'm complimenting myself on how "He's pulled off this daring jump for 1st, by tuckin' it in low of this corner".
I hit a loose patch of the new road, as seen in the second picture, in this tucked and tilted possition, and immediately go to stand the bike up hit the brakes and readjust vectoring. But there was just no way.........
Now you're probably thinking, why didn't he just jump the ditch ahead and jump back onto the road once stabablized... So I digress... See I did have that exact thought, only I misread the density of the dirt on the near side of the ditch, and it was to the consistancy of quick sand, and as soon and I pushed downward on my handlebars to jump the ditch, the front tire decided it was tired and stopped right there. I of course wasn't done yet, and felt like I'd like to take flight and try it for a change. Thankfully my parents were gracious to enroll me into gymnastics and karate at a young age, so the "Tuck and Roll B*tch" move saved my ass when I was unable to sustain flight for as long as I had hoped.
Thankfully God foresaw my stupidity and softened my landing pad before hand. I only wish He would have put some Frebreeze in there, because the mudd facial/bath I took didn't leave me with that summer breeze freshness if you know what I mean. Needless to say I am now a hankerchief, t-shirt, and wrist band less than I was at the beginning of that day.

The next ~15mi. back to my car was rather chilly, but on the upside I was able to lift quite a few spirits of those I passed by.

Arch Ride One/Wednesday Group Ride

Oh boy, there is so much to tell about this past week's rides. I am not sure where I should start.

Wednesday's group ride brought a couple new additions to the club. I am not talking about members, I am talking about new steeds for Sir Starman and Sir Banana. Banana found a good one to match his cherished tropical fruit and Starman to match the color of his favorite week, shark.

Other than the new bikes there is little to mention. As always, the Tool found a way to make us all feel a bit uncomfortable and Captain explained why being from both Pennsylvania and Maine made him superior.

The first Arch Ride of the year was a great success! The further distance attracted a new member, Eric "Rose" Cawley, to come out for the trek. Rose was a bit quiet during the ride but did most of the talking with his legs.

About half way to the Arch we stopped at my house to get some fuel and picked-up a new honorary member Samantha "First Lady" Ellis. The First Lady has made multiple requests to join the club and on Saturday she earned her stripes after climbing the north entrance hill.

Mark was very proud to finally see a women sitting next to him. You can see him here whispering sweet nothings into her ear:

You can plan on us doing an Arch Ride once a month or so as we prepare for our KC ride.

See you Wednesday,

Johnson

PS: We are thinking about adding a triathlon branch to the Cycling Club. Captain and Banana are spearheading this movement.

Logan Team Kits

Hey Kids,

Logan kits (jersey and bibs) are in the works.....BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! The image above is a rough idea of what they will look like. We are going to use the company Champion Systems at champ-sys.com to make the kits. Champ Sys has been around for a bit and they produce a high quality product. The total cost of a bib and jersey is $105. This is a GREAT PRICE for a CUSTOM set. In order for us to place an order we need to have at least 10 people get a kit. It will take up to 10 weeks (but hopefully less) to get the kits in so the sooner we can get the order in the better. Johnson (a.k.a. John Ellis) said he was willing to put the money down to get the ball rolling. If you want to get bibs with thicker pads they are an extra $10. If there are some out there that don't want a bib there is also the option of jersey and short for $97 (add $10 if you want thicker pads). A fit kit will be sent to us so we can be sure that everything we get will fit.

We are planning some group charity rides in the not so distant future (and many, many, many other events yet to come) and it will be great to have a uniform so we can be seen as the excellent group that we are and shine a good light for Logan.

If you are interested please let Ellis know and if you have any questions please feel free to ask either John or I (Jonathan). This is a great opportunity to get a sweet product for a great price. Lets kick it!!

Julian McMurray for SDC President! [UPDATED]

If you know Julian you understand why he is our choice for SDC President. Julian exemplifies leadership both in and out of the classroom, on and off the road. Simply put, he knows how to get the job done. With his boyish good looks and charming smile, there is little this man cannot accomplish.

Julian has pledged his commitment to help the Cycling Club to the best of his ability. Which essentially means we own him like Snooki owns the poof.

Be sure to make it to room 156B at 11am on Tuesday to vote for Julian.

Update: Thanks to our endorsement, Julian won his bid for SDC President. Congratulations Julian!

Flying V

Today the club took a quick ride around the short route with a couple new members. The first was a long time rider, first time clubber, Matt "Nair" Davidson. Nair is a long time rider and Ironman athlete, which essentially means he could kick all of our asses.

The second new rider was Jeff "Goose" Binder. You may be asking yourself, "Self, why is Jeff's nickname Goose? Is it due to his extensive military back group? Maybe it is because he leaves droppings all over the golf course?" Neither of these guesses are correct. Next time please just allow me to explain the story without interrupting your reading with idiotic thoughts.

The real reason why Goose is Goose is as follows. During the winter many birds find in necessary to fly south to a warmer climate. While flying they tend to form a "V" to cut the wind and allow for an easier flight. While this works well for geese, the same principles apply to cyclist. Normally the geese will rotate from back to front working their way forward until they take the head position. In our case, everyone moved forward to take the lead except for one weak goose who stayed in the back the entire ride.

On the positive side, he was able to make it all the way...95% of the way up the north entrance hill at school.

Good ride today boys. Keep up the good work.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way Out of Big Shark

As you may have read in the last post we have a new rider/member, Garrett "Banana" Brugger. He may have fooled you by wearing such a sweet kit on our ride last week but he is actually not an owner of a bike or any type of equipment. So, yesterday, Captain and I decided to bring Banana out to a couple shops to try some bikes on for size.

We ended the day at Big Shark on the Loop in U-City and had a wonderful salesman named Kevin. He talked to Banana about what type of riding he was doing, what his price range was, all the normal stuff. In no time, he had him up on a trainer sizing him up in their state of the art fitting area. Banana found about four bikes he liked and took them all for a vigorous test ride. He was able to find one that he liked the best but didn't want to jump the gun too quick. He needed some time to think it over.

On the way out of the shop, Banana noticed he did not have his phone with him. After some thought he realized he took it out of his pocket while he was being fitted. What he did not realize is that there were some hoodlums that came into the shop and stole his phone while he was out on a test ride. When Kevin heard the news, code 4 was set into place, and he rounded up two of his most trusted employees to track down the bandits. In what seemed like just an instant, they had grabbed a few bikes off the stands and heading out in search of Banana's precious phone.

While we waiting for the employees to return from the hunt, we had decided that there was only a slight chance his phone would be recovered but still we had faith. About 30 minutes later one of the employees (we will call him Steve), came up to us and told us they found the phone. Once they captured the thief, Steve noticed he had stashed the phone in a bush while they were interrogating him. Good work Steve! Banana was soon reunited with his trusty mobile and all Big Shark employees were congratulated with the official Logan Cycling Club high five (which is no different than a normal high five).

I would like to think that Kevin stopped the thieves like this...

Big Shark, we commend you! Not only have you captured Banana's phone, you have captured our hearts in the process.

Inaugural Group Ride Report

Hello Logan Cycling Club fans and members. I apologize for not posting anything sooner but I find I must wait to be inspired before I can adequately post.

Our first ride as a University recognized club went great. We started with six people, picked up one along the way, and finished with five. We are still not sure what happened to the other two but we are working on erecting a memorial in their honor.

We had multiple firsts on the ride, we had our first member to vomit, our first broken derailleur, a first time road rider and our first sponsorship. Apparently, Captain and a new member Rob "The Tool" Hammerling, received sponsorships from Orange and Lemon Jell-O. I hope Bill Cosby is not upset.

Surprisingly, our new rider, Garret "Banana" Brugger, not only kept up with the rest of us but often set the pace, leaving the rest of us in the dust. Here is a picture we snapped while he was acting casual.

Our next ride is looking to be on Sunday as Saturday is going to be cold and rainy. Keep checking back for updates. And Ruby 106 if you are out there we have your license plate.

Annual Meeting Recap

If you are on the e-mail list then you already received this information. We are all very excited about what is to come for the club. Check back frequently as the blog is now out of hibernation for the winter.

"In case you were not at the meeting yesterday, here is what you missed.

- Group road rides will be starting in the next few weeks and should be twice a week, one after classes during the week and the other on Saturday morning.

- Secure bike rack on campus. Many of you may have noticed that there are not many places to park your bike at school. We are in the process of finding a covered area for us to put our bikes on days we do group rides or if you plan on riding in to school and don't want to have to worry about leaving your bike outside. More to come on this soon.

- STL to KC ride. Plans are in the works for a St. Louis to Kansas City ride for the club. We are very excited about this and would like to have as many people as possible participate. We do not want to exclude anyone from coming with us, even if your fitness level is not up to a ride that long, we would like to make it possible for folks to attend as support drivers or ride half days or every other day.

- T-shirts are on order today and should be in by the end of next week. If you have not paid your $10 you may do so any time next week. You can find me or Jonathan Emlet. Our classroom is G48 if you want to come down between classes.

Hope to see you all at our inaugural group ride within the next few weeks."
